I am finally farming
yesterday nikita (french girl who has been at this farm for over 1 month) and i planted lettuces and weeded in the greenhouse because it was raining. we had a long discussion with the farm jefe, Sergio, about the salmon farms (I am in the heart of salmon farming), but really nikita was in the middle translating.
the house we´re staying in is full of stuff, just stuff. Matias (farm owner) used to live in it, and he basically abandoned it at some point and moved into a different house, so this one has traces of his life before, with his (now ex) wife and his daughter. it´s a little weird, but it´s neat… there is no fridge, or oven, or hot water. there are cracks everywhere and my window even has a corner missing. neither nikita nor i can build a decent fire in the wood stove, so we were pretty chilly last night since it rained all day.
the water comes from the lagoon up the hill, where we swim as well and the water there is warmer than when it comes from the tap so it is better to rinse yourself there and then lay in the sun and consider oneself decently clean.
i like it, though the work is only occasional (or as much as i want, really) and there aren´t any real comforts. when did i become such a hippie?
today i took the bus to Castro, the largest town on the island of Chiloé, and i am spending the night here since there is no farm work on the weekends. i can´t help but feel this was a mistake, however, because it took forever to get here and this means i have to leave decently early tomorrow to get back to pto montt in time to grocery shop and get back to the farm. gah.
i love and miss you all, be home in 11 days.
